HEAD' Geneva, traditionally the largest visual arts school in Switzerland, offers three of the five HES-SO Master in Visual Arts majors.

WORK.MASTER CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC PRACTICES
TRANS– ART EDUCATION
CCC CRITICAL CURATORIAL CYBERMEDIA

These various programmes create bridges though each one is designed as a highly individualised trans-disciplinary study platform defined by the work and projects of each artist or research group. Thus each orientation encourages the maturation of a personal work or a collective project already geared to the professional art scene and social reality.

HEAD Geneva is also offering two postgraduate programmes ALPes (Art, Location, Landscape, Sound space) and REAL (Realisation Ceramic & Polymers). More information: http://head.hesge.ch/spip.php?rubrique235

WORK.MASTER CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC PRACTICES

http://head.hesge.ch/spip.php?rubrique236〈=en

The programme time is balanced between personal research reflexion and group brainstorming. The work pace alternates between workshop research and experimentation, internal courses, meetings with external partners (artistes, theorists et curators, agents and politicians, cultural institutions), visits and trips abroad as well as practical encounters such as personal exhibits and group
project presentations.

The courses are mainly given in French

TRANS– ART EDUCATION
4 full-time semesters – 120 ECTS credits
http://head.hesge.ch/spip.php?rubrique237〈=en

The programme is based on the students artistic experience. Under the leadership of art and theory specialists, this mental exercise aims at translating, transcribing and transferring ones own artistic experience and to share or propose it to others. In fact, it is to answer the question: How, on the basis of my own work and my relation to creation, can I guide children or adults and establish teaching and workshops where they can practice creation and find their own forms of expression?

Audience: All students who, on the basis of their basic artistic principles, wish to explore the broadest fields of artistic and cultural transmission: editing, interactions with the population, art and/or heritage mediation workshops in an associative or institutional environment. The TRANS programme also opens the doors to teaching.

Formation : master, SFAI Accepting Applications for Fall 2008, San Francisco, USA.

San Francisco Art Institute
800 Chestnut Street
San Francisco, CA 94133
800 345 SFAI/415 749 4500

SFAI has extended deadlines for Master of Fine Arts programs in Design and Technology; Film; and Sculpture/Ceramics. Applications will be accepted through May 1, 2008.

In addition, Master of Arts applications will be accepted through May 15, 2008 for programs in Exhibition and Museum Studies, in History and Theory of Contemporary Art, and in Urban Studies.

Master of Fine Arts
Reflecting a long legacy of studio-based practice, SFAI’s MFA programs challenge students to consider a range of approaches to the practices of art--conceptual as well as formal, contemporary as well as traditional. SFAI’s Design and Technology department invites students to use the visual language of design and interactive technology to achieve conceptual goals that remake the global media cultures of advertising, entertainment, gaming, and fashion. The Film department at SFAI is one of the oldest and most influential in the United States and is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of experimental filmmaking. With the addition of a new program in ceramics in the Fall of 2008, SFAI’s Sculpture department emphasizes interdisciplinary, conceptual, and material-based inquiry; contemporary and traditional sculptural practice; and avant-garde as well as traditional ideas.

Master of Arts
In SFAI’s distinctive MA programs, students are trained to become rigorous critical thinkers capable of imagining innovative and unconventional solutions to problems and issues applicable across a variety of fields. Exhibition and Museum Studies explores how museums and exhibition practices can be understood as both historical objects and subjects, while History and Theory of Contemporary Art addresses the dismantling of the hierarchies of artistic mediums, the globalization of culture, the intersection of Western and non-Western modernity, and the question of authorship in the practice of contemporary art. The MA in Urban Studies combines the resources of both the School of Studio Practice and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, permitting an in-depth study of urban forms
and habitat.

San Francisco Art Institute

Founded in 1871, SFAI is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of higher education in contemporary art in the US. Focusing on the interdependence of thinking, making, and learning, SFAI’s academic and public programs are dedicated to excellence and diversity.

SFAI’s School of Studio Practice concentrates on developing the artist’s vision through studio experiments and is based on the belief that artists are an essential part of society. It offers a BFA, an MFA, and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate in Design and Technology, Film, New Genres, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture/Ceramics.

SFAI’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies is motivated by the premise that critical thinking and writing, informed by an in-depth understanding of theory and practice, are essential for engaging contemporary global society. It offers degree programs in History and Theory of Contemporary Art (BA and MA), Urban Studies (BA and MA), and Exhibition and Museum Studies (MA only).

For more information about the MFA, MA, BFA, or BA programs at SFAI, please go to http://www.sfai.edu , send an e-mail to admissions@sfai.edu , or call 415 749 4500.

Master : Roski School of Fine Arts, Los Angeles, USA.

he Public Art Studies Program at the Roski School of Fine Arts, University of Southern California in Los Angeles, has begun a process of self-examination, and curricular and structural transformation, under the leadership of the newly appointed Director of the Program Joshua Decter.

The PAS program has extended its application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year to June 2, 2008, to seek students from a range of academic, disciplinary, and
professional backgrounds.

This 2-year graduate masters program currently confers a Master of Art Studies (MPAS) degree, and offers a unique context for the study of key issues regarding the history, current manifestations, and the future of art practices in the public sphere. We examine the complexities of community engagement, modes of collaborative and participatory art production, the historical and contemporary conditions of site/location-specificity, and the debates around relational aesthetics, among other topics. Issues are rigorously investigated through a cluster of seminars, directed research opportunities, practicums, and guest lectures. The program functions as a hub for critical thinking regarding the role of art in the public sphere, and the analysis of cultural interventions in spatial territories.

The PAS program considers urban, suburban, and disurban environments as porous zones in which real and imaginary borders are continuously under construction and erasure in terms of ethnicity, immigration/migration, labor, and class. Public space encompasses a complex flow of bodies, capital, cultural representations and social desires, as well as frictional contact with the private domain. If artistic, architectural and other cultural interventions within city-spaces constitute a kind of urban acupuncture, is there a crisis in the experience of today’s public sphere that requires treatment?

We offer a cross-disciplinary curriculum structure, incorporating discourses/methods from art history, art criticism, urbanism, architectural history and theory, social science, and urban planning. Students interrogate the ways in which artists, architects, theorists, and curators seek to critically re-script lived environments; they are encouraged to consider new forms of cultural-political citizenship in relation to the democratic potential of the public sphere. Currently, the PAS program is one of the institutions partnered with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles for their “Allan Kaprow—Art as Life” exhibition; students are collaborating with the Tijuana/Los Angeles-based art collective, Bulbo, to reactivate a 1970 Kaprow Happening in the public space of Los Angeles.

The Program currently features a dual-degree program with Planning in the USC School of Planning and Development, as well as a dual degree with Hebrew Union College, Los Angeles. Discussions are underway to develop cross-disciplinary affiliations with USC graduate programs in Architecture, Art History and the Masters of Fine Arts degree. Fellowships and scholarships are available on a competitive basis.

Joshua Decter is a critic, curator, art historian and theorist. Decter organized the conference, “The Situational Drive: Complexities of Public Sphere Engagement,” in collaboration with inSite San Diego/Tijuana and Creative Time, New York, presented at The Cooper Union, NY, in May 2007.
