With works from all five continents, the sixth edition of LOOP transforms Barcelona into an enormous showcase for international videoart.

LOOP, which began with the aim of resolving the needs of the different agents involved in the world of videoart, has established itself as a platform and an annual meeting point for everyone who is directly or indirectly involved in the artistic processes of experimental and independent video.

The LOOP network, which has grown from 48 to 61 participating countries is set to reactivate in over 100 venues that range from institutions like the CCCB, the Fundació Miró and the Pavelló Mies van der Rohe to restaurants and small business, all exhibiting the latest in videoart. This year, LOOP will present the work of over 800 artists, including highlights such as Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Deimantas Narkevicius, Jia Zhang-Ke and Mark Wallinger, among others.

Festival LOOP (May 6 - 18)
The festival includes work from all five continents, and has made a qualitative leap thanks to the increased presence of curated programs, internationally acclaimed collections and 22 prestigious universities from 14 countries that have designed programs especially for LOOP.

Special highlights include the program "For Your Eyes Only", exhibited in the Fundació Suñol and curated by Hilde Teerlinck, with works recently acquired by the Frac Nord-Pas de Calais, Dunkerque (France), which includes leading artists like Deimantas Narkevicius (Lithuania, 1964). A program from the Collecció Cal Cego d’Art Contemporani, curated by its artistic director Montse Badia, will also be presented especially for LOOP.

The festival will also exclusively show the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin at the Fundació Joan Miró. The program curated by its director Enrique Juncosa includes work by the prestigious video artist Willie Doherty (Derry, Ireland, 1959), among others.

The Fundació Mies van der Rohe will show “Shenzhen–The Twin Cities / Hong Kong–The Twin Cities City of Expiration and Regeneration”, two documentaries by the Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke (Shanxi, 1970), who was the recipient of the Golden Lion award at the 2006 Venice International Film Festival.

LOOP'08, together with the Instituto Cervantes, will present the vision:a in Spain for the first time. This program is an exhibition of works by twelve Spanish and Latin American video artists that has been shown in various Instituto Cervantes centres around the world.

And for the first time in Barcelona, the Casablanca-Kaplan cinemas will present “Cinematic Works”, the title given to a compilation of the most acclaimed video installations by the prestigious Finnish video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila.

LOOP Diverse
To coincide with the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the Festival will present the LOOP DIVERSE program. Restaurants, hairdressers, and all kinds of businesses run by Barcelona’s communities of foreigners, will become cultural embassies by showing videoart created in their home countries. The communities participating in this edition will be: Argentinean, Bolivian, Brazilian, Chilean, Chinese, Columbian, Dominican, Ecuadorian, English French, German, Italian, Moroccan, Pakistani, Peruvian, and Filipino.

LOOP FAIR’08 (May 8 – 10)
The videoart Fair, which will be held at the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas de Barcelona, will present over 40 highly prestigious international galleries. In keeping with the traditional LOOP Fair structure, each gallery will have one of the hotel’s rooms in which to present a video and artist of their choice to professionals and the general public.

Some of the leading galleries participating in LOOP'08 for the first time include Jocelyn Wolff and Gb Agency (Paris, France) and Mummery + Schnelle (London, UK). The high level of international participation is confirmed by the presence of prestigious galleries from 14 different countries and the 29 nationalities of their 44 participating artists.

Talks and Media Lounge
Under the title “The Frontiers of Videoart”, the talks and round tables in this edition will discuss the limits between videoart and electronic art. For this purpose, LOOP has invited experts such as Barbara London (MoMA, New York), Pip Laurenson (Tate Modern, London), Hans Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Gallery, London), Christopher Eamon (Kramlich Collection, San Francisco), Erich Berger (LABoral, Gijón) and Caroline Bourgeois (Frac Ile de France), among others.

The Hotel Catalonia Ramblas will also host a new space called the Media Lounge on May 8 and 9 that will be open to the public, and bring together leading video distributors, specialist magazines, Internet platforms, universities and videoart festivals from around the world.

Du 7 mai au 15 juin 2008, le Frac Champagne-Ardenne présente la première exposition personnelle dans une institution francaise de l’artiste new-yorkais Gedi Sibony. A cette occasion, l’artiste présente sculptures et installations qui rendent compte d'une esthétique en filigrane caractérisée par une utilisation physique des formes et des matériaux : carton, bois, moquette, gaines en plastique ou peinture latex sont incorporés à l’architecture de la salle d’exposition. L’interaction entre ces “matériaux sans qualité” aboutit à des arrangements fragiles allant bien au-delà de leurs simples propriétés tactiles.

Amateurs surveys a terrain of artistic practice that departs from the hyperprofessionalization characterizing so much cultural production today. Whether working as amateurs in disciplines beyond the art world or collaborating with amateur practitioners, the artists featured in this exhibition refuse to let the experts have the last word. They are committed instead to a democratization of artistic production—one that often invites us, the viewers, to reflect upon our own roles and question our basic assumptions about authorship and expertise.

Bringing together work from the past 25 years, the exhibition explores the role of the amateur in investigating areas that are ignored by professional practitioners, and also in developing a modus operandi that departs from established technical, formal, and conceptual standards. Many of the featured artists celebrate amateur cultural practices for their “impurity”—their accidental or indifferent mixing of genres, aesthetics, and symbolic codes. They embrace “professional amateurism” (no matter how paradoxical it might sound) as a critical strategy and look askance at the narrow limits defining mainstream contemporary art.

Amateurs will be accompanied by a full-color catalog with essays by exhibition curator Ralph Rugoff and the scholar John Roberts.

« Une matérialité en devenir.
Avec la dernière exposition d’Ed Huo, nous sommes amenés à mettre en regard l'un de l'autre un « mode de production » d'un côté, et un « mode de représentation » de l'autre. En d'autres termes : nous sommes amenés à mettre en regard le « style » économique d'une société donnée et son « style » idéologique et artistique. Une pareille confrontation est-elle possible ? Alors que le premier réflexe de tout spécialiste de l’art contemporain serait de dire « non », il découle d'une façon absolument indiscutable , lors de la visite de ‘Limits’, que nous avons pleinement le droit de procéder à cette confrontation. Nous découvrons qu’un transpalette est très intéressant sur le plan symbolique ; c’est pourquoi il est décliné, dans l’exposition à la Bergerie – Lieu d’Art Contemporain, sous plusieurs formes (installation, performance, sérigraphie, vidéo, …). L’ego est capable de tout annexer à ses propres fins, y compris la spiritualité. Le jeune artiste d’origine chinoise approche la matérialité d’une façon radicale. Il commence à la considérer avec fascination, puis il l’examine. Mais, en tout état de cause, comme il se refuse à absorber véritablement quoi que ce soit, il ne se borne nullement à imiter mais à circonvenir. En raison du contraste qu’il instaure, l’epokhè, ce phénomène de mise en suspens est particulièrement sensible dans les dispositifs où l’artiste montre des individus aux prises avec des outils ou des machines à l’aspect ontologiquement suburbain. En se plaçant devant la dernière installation, le spectateur peut apercevoir, d’un même point de vue, une vision globale de notre monde et une diffraction du réel que dissocient les images. Lorsqu’on considère l’histoire de la culture visuelle, force est de constater qu’Ed Huo se situe dans une superbe continuation épistémologique des premières représentations de la postmodernité. Devant cette magnifique exposition, on ne peut qu’être étonné qu’un si jeune artiste montre une telle intelligence et un tel regard. »

Fabrice Pichat est né en 1980 à Chambéry. Il vit et travaille à Bruxelles.

C'est à une promenade sensorielle, illusioniste et a-réflexive, que nous convie Fabrice Pichat à Triangle. Souhaitant nous délester des réflexes qui conditionnent notre approche du sensible et son apprentissage, il nous invite à devenir, le temps de l'exposition, de véritables idiots qui puissent, à l'image du personnage du roman éponyme de Dostoiewski, aborder toute situation comme vierges du handicap de l'expérience. Aux antipodes de la très tendance "philosophie des conséquences", l'exposition tente au contraire de s'extraire de toute logique de cause à effet, le spectateur étant invité à solliciter son "chou fleur gélatineux" en sa position médiane, c'est à dire en dehors de toute polarisation cerveau gauche/droit - polarisation souvent prétexte pour les spécialistes à d'absurdes et manichéennes classifications de type créativité VS logique.

Dès lors, d'objets flottants en objets absents, déformés voire invisibles, la pratique de Fabrice Pichat affirme le potentiel existentialiste des objets, devenus réfractaires à une perception unique et porteurs d'une vision du monde élargie, pour qui veut bien se départir de sa parure d'homme civilisé pour se faire promener, l'espace d'un instant, par un idiot...

Cette exposition fait suite à l’accueil en résidence des deux artistes entre mars et avril à Pontmain.

Frédéric Bouffandeau développe ses recherches de coloristes au moyen d’une matrice qu’il multiplie par glissement pour envahir l’espace. Face à ses walldrawing, il explore l’immatérialité de la couleur dans l’univers lumineux des tubes néons qui composent un nouvel axe dans son travail.

Patrice Normand est co-fondateur du collectif de photographes Temps Machine. Pendant sa résidence, l’artiste a fixé les visages des missionnaires pontaminois dans des moments d’intimités, sans artifices, ni retouches. Il aborde ici le voyage intérieur, le recueillement et le silence. Il présente également la série « L’Erosion » réalisée au cimetière du père Lachaise ainsi qu’une création sonore.

Du 7 mai au 21 septembre 2008 L’exposition « Micro-Narratives, Tentation des petites réalités », présentée du 7 mai au 21 septembre au Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne Métropole regroupe 87 artistes vivants, de générations différentes et venus de 24 pays*. Cette exposition, dont le commissariat est assuré par Lorand Hegyi, directeur du Musée, a été présentée dans une version un peu différente au 48 ème Salon d’Octobre de Belgrade en 2007 organisé par le Centre Culturel de Belgrade.

Dans la continuité des expositions « Settlements » présentée en 2004 et « Domicile : privé/public » montée en 2005, « Micro-Narratives » veut dresser un état des lieux d’une nouvelle attitude artistique à l’époque de la radicalisation des conflits globaux, des valeurs religieuses, des idéologies, des systèmes socioculturels et de la fin des grandes vérités. Il s’agit de l’intérêt croissant des artistes pour les petites réalités, pour la multiplication des environnements socioculturels spontanés, pour les phénomènes de micro-communication. Les philosophes Arthur C. Danto et Jean-François Lyotard identifient la fin des grands récits et des sujets universels, et une attention désormais portée aux « petits récits » ou micro-narratives. Ces récits n’appartiennent plus à des intellectuels mais bien à des artistes, qui opèrent dans des situations microsociales avec des prises de position locales. L’artiste d’aujourd’hui ne serait donc plus l’intellectuel qui avait le droit d’agir au nom d’un sujet universel.

E.P.A. (Environmental Performance Actions) is a group exhibition surveying recent performance works that take as their cues the spontaneous situations and intermedia of the Happenings and Fluxus movements, and the impassioned energy of environmental activism. Environmental performance actions began in the 1960s when artists, responding to a host of environmental crises and concerns, began organizing both guerilla actions and planned performances to draw attention to those issues and suggest solutions. The legacy of those pioneering artists, like Joseph Beuys, Hans Haacke, Alan Sonfist and Agnes Denes, inspired a second, and now a third, generation of artists to explore the interstice of humans and nature. The documentation of their activities, performed mostly outdoors with a limited audience, has evolved with technological innovations in photography and video, allowing a larger audience to engage in the dialogue created from these artists’ actions. E.P.A. inc ludes a range of ephemera, artifacts and documentation from thirty recent actions. The works range from theatrical to documentary and capture the multifarious strategies that artists are using to address issues such as climate change, watersheds, urbanization and, ultimately, human survival.

E.P.A. is the first project of S.E.A. (Social-Environmental Aesthetics), an exhibition program and archive of artworks that address social and environmental concerns. It will assemble artists, activists, scientists and scholars to address these issues through presentations of visual art, performances, panels and lecture series. Central to the mission of S.E.A. is to provide a vehicle through which the public can be made aware of this kind of work, to provide a forum for collaboration between artists and ecologists and to inspire them to continue the tradition of work that S.E.A. presents. The S.E.A. Archive will be a permanent catalog of information, images and videos that will be a searchable database for scholars and researchers. S.E.A., E.P.A., and all future projects will occupy a permanent space in Exit Underground, a multimedia performance, film, and exhibition venue underneath Exit Art’s main
gallery space.

This project was curated by Exit Art, ecoartspace curator Amy Lipton, and founder/co-curator Patricia Watts. The S.E.A. initiative and E.P.A. exhibition were conceived by Papo Colo and Jeanette Ingberman.

Qu’est-ce qu’une frontière ? Une frontière est une ligne. Abstraite puisque invisible. « Passer une frontière est toujours quelque chose d’un peu émouvant : une limite imaginaire, matérialisée par une barrière de bois qui d’ailleurs n’est jamais vraiment sur la ligne qu’elle est censée représenter, mais quelques dizaines ou quelques centaines de mètres en deçà ou au-delà, suffit pour tout changer,… ». One of the targets of the Holy Fire exhibition (iMAL, 18-30 april) is to take a snapshot of the present situation of New Media Art, an art practice arose from the meeting of art and computer technology in the Sixties. This practice developed into a self-built, parallel art system and had a second youth in the last half of the Nineties.
New Media Art has always been described as process oriented, immaterial, and therefore un-collectable and un-preservable. Now getting to its adult age, it is entering the contemporary art world and market.

About iMAL iMAL (interactive Media Art Laboratory), is a non-profit association created in Brussels in 1999. It was founded by individual artists, media producers, interactive designers, software engineers, and by NICC (a Belgian association of visual artists) with the objective to support artistic forms and creative practices using computer and network technologies as their medium. In October 2007, iMAL opened its new venue in Brussels, a Center for Digital Cultures and Technology, a new place of about 600m2 for the meeting of artistic, scientific and industrial innovations, a place entirely dedicated to the contemporary artistic and cultural practices emerging from the fusion of computer, telecommunication, network and media. IMAL is a laboratory and a workplace for artists in residence. It supports artists during their experimentation and research process as well as for the production and diffusion of their works. iMAL produces professional workshops targeted to creative people (artists, designers, developers,) under the direction of recognised artists. iiMAL organises public events and collaborates with other european centers. Works (co-)produced by iMAL have been shown in Helsinki (Kiasma, 2003), Madrid (VIDA, 2003), Los Angeles (AIM iV, 2003), Stuttgart (Filmwinter, 2004), Lisbon (Alkantara, Close Encounters III, 2006), Amsterdam (Victorian Circus at Brakke Grond, 2006), Basle (Viper, 2006), Montral (Temps dImages, 2007), Sao Paulo (File, 2007), Ghent (Almost Cinema at Vooruit, 2007), Shanghai (eArts/Ars Electronica, 2007), London (Sum/Some of the PARTS, 2007). iMAL is supported by the French-speaking Community of Belgium.
